Now the new rules on Enroute IR is finally published by EASA, EIR pilots will soon need to specify VFR/IFR and IFR/VFR transition points in their flightplans. I hope Skydemon will be able to handle this in the near future.




It should be able to appoint transition points by point-and-click the same way you designate other waypoints. The app should check MSA at the transition point (1000 ft to highest terrain/obstacle within 5 NM) and also check if the cloud ceiling - based on nearest reported weather - is higher than the point MSA.

I would not mind to work around by manually editing the route information in field 15, so to enter the VFR/IFR and IFR/VFR transition points.
But there is another critical problem for which I am missing a solution: SkyDemon does not allow to edit field 8 - Flight Rules (should be Z, in lieu of V).

Since the airways view already exists, I think it would not be a huge effort to allow for a basic EIR flight planning. And it would be so cool if all EIR-students had the perspective to continue with SkyDemon once they have achieved their EIR rating.

If we're going down the IFR route then adding an IFR/VFR flag to each route leg would allow you to specify the transition points and the flight plan can then auto insert V, Y, Z and IFR VFR transitions automatically.

That does look like a very elegant solution!

Could we have some feedback from the SD team? I start learning theory for the EIR next month and it would be nice to know if I have to look for another software for EIR flight planning and navigation. Since EIR does not include IFR approaches, SID og STAR, I guess it would take only a small effort to make this briliant VFR product very useable for EIR.

There are no IFR route generation and filing facilities built in to SkyDemon, so it makes sense to use other software for this.

I know SD is not certified for inflight IFR navigation. But I don't understand why you do not make it capable of preparing and filing IFR flight plans since you have already included IFR enroute charts?

I don't need an autoroute tool, for that I can use eurofpl.eu, which is free to use. But it would be great if I could just enter the proposed route in SD and file the flightplan via SD, which allows me to delay flightplans from the ipad.

 

Most people who want SkyDemon to file IFR also want SkyDemon to generate their route. This is not unreasonable. But, it means that we would only really be prepared to do one if we also did the other. We don't want to do either, at the moment. SkyDemon is targeted at the VFR market.

You can use any accepted mathod to specify a transition point. Geographic coordinates work just as well as does radial and distance from a navaid. Published points are just a convenient way but by no means the only.
